WINTER'S Cold Weather means Special Care for your Pets. · Never leave your Pet outside in the cold for long periods of time. Wind chill makes days colder than actual temperature readings. · Frost bite is a winter hazard. To prevent frost bite on ears, tail and feet, don't leave your Pet outdoors for too long. · Don't leave your Pet alone in a vehicle. It gets too cold and carbon monoxide from an engine left running is dangerous. · Towel or blow-dry your Pet if he gets wet from rain or snow. It is important to dry and clean his paws. This helps avoid tiny cuts and cracked pads from rock salt. A little petroleum jelly applied to pads will help prevent cracking. · Antifreeze, which often collects on driveways and roads is highly poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your Pet but it can be lethal. · Adequate shelter is a necessity. Keep your Pet warm, dry and away from drafts. Tile and uncarpeted areas may become extremely cold. Place blankets and pads on bare floors especially in basements. · Groom your Pet regularly. Your Pet needs a well-groomed coat to keep him insulated. Short or coarse haired Pets may get extra cold so consider a sweater or coat. · Be careful of heat sources. Fireplaces and portable heaters can severely burn your Pet. · Provide plenty of fresh water. Snow is not a satisfactory substitute for fresh water. · Pets like people seem more susceptible to illness in winter. Take your Pet to a Veterinarian if you see any suspicious symptoms. · All pets should have proper identification: collar with an ID tag, tattoo or microchip. · Keep your pet's vaccinations current. · Make sure your Veterinarian's and Emergency Veterinary Clinic's telephone numbers are handy and available to all family members. |
